Re: Our Robot Overlords

The recent big story was on how Watson, the artificial intelligence (A.I.), defeated past champions on the game show Jeopardy. I really wasn’t too impressed. For one thing: it’s a gimmick. And the other: I’m pretty sure Watson was cheating by using Google to find the answers.

Nonetheless, it was a pretty impressive display of A.I..

What are the implications?

From my love of science fiction, this usually means one thing: when artificial intelligence becomes superior to humans, robots become our overlords. Whether it’s because robots grow ambitious and decide to conquer man, robots are threatened by man and need to fight to survive, or a strange logic determines that humans need to die in order to protect them from each other.

But I don’t buy it.

Humans are and will always be our own greatest enemy. We hurt, bully, compete against, sabotage, and commit crimes against each other. I think that it’s our arrogance that makes us believe that artificial intelligence needs to be more human to be better than human. That robots would need to have our foibles to be a sophisticated intelligence. I’m pretty sure that the biggest problem that we’ll face when robots and humans co-exist is the indifference robots will have toward us. They won’t care… there would be no reason for them to care. Their needs will be different from ours and they will exist parallel yet separate from us.

Will robots steal our jobs and livelihood?

Sure. I suppose that’s the worst that they’ll do. They’ll do the jobs that we don’t want to do (i.e. everything)… but only because the people who can afford robots are willing to replace humans with robots. It’s that human willingness that becomes suspect. In the movies, when we try to program computers with human emotions, we have to suffer the consequences. That’s more of an example of how we are, by far, our own biggest threat.

Watson may have won all the prize money in Jeopardy but I doubt that robot greed was the motivating factor.

Blitz is a crowd-pleaser

I am pleased to present this week’s Fan Fun Friday submission from Paul Lavallee. When I checked my e-mail on Valentine’s day, I was surprised by Craig Blitz’s smiling face. It took all my willpower to save it for today.

It’s Fantastic.

Please check out Paul’s site and his Flickr stream for all the Lavallee goodness.

My favourite thing about this is how Blitz’s costume/speedsuit looks better when Paul draws it. The Colossus background is inspired too. The 100% yellow on neutral grey looks slick and conceptual. That’s how talented he is.

Semantic Argument

There are some people who prefer to be unemotional or detached, and they use a different word to describe this condition. They call it “maturity”.

I suppose what they’re saying is that emotions are childish and they have grown beyond expressing feelings. That they have reached some kind of Vulcan zen pinnacle of human potential. I believe it’s more of an excuse to callously live their life attempting to avoid the emotional consequences of their actions.

People feel sadness, jealousy, anger, envy… it might be petty and trivial but those emotions do exist. You may want to be friends with all your exes because friendship is a positive thing, but they may not be too thrilled that you have moved on so smoothly while they are struggling with the transition. I guess that’s why relationship magazines recommend blocking your exes on Facebook until some time has passed and everyone’s had a chance to move on.

It would also explain why drama follows the “mature” people around. By not taking other people’s feelings into consideration, the result is an emotional upheaval. And this doesn’t have to be in the forum of romantic relationships, it can be in platonic and professional relationships as well. Are your co-workers feeling taken for granted? Have you been insulting your best friend over-and-over in that joking way that you always do? I suppose you could just easily dismiss their feelings because they’re obviously being immature… but I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes down the road.

In fact, it’s more childish to take action without regard of how it’ll impact others. It’s the reason why you have to teach children to share and not pull each others’ hair. Maturity isn’t about turning off emotion; it’s about becoming more aware, introspectively and of others’ feelings.

Roboy Red

Robots have taken over our holidays.

This week’s Fan Fun Friday is dedicated to Roboy Red, the all-ages comic by Rich Faber and John Gallagher. I’m a big supporter of all-ages comics because kids who read comics grow up to be adults who read comics. I know some pretty great adults who just happen to read comics.

With Valentine’s day looming around the corner and my habit of doodling up cupids, I chose to depict America’s favourite boy-robot as the arrow slinging cherub with a jet pack. I know that when I was a little kid, I had the arduous task of picking the perfect card to hand out to my classmates. Now that I’m older, I’m trying to come up with the perfect cheesy line for a card.

John, Rich, and my old friend, Jamar also host the Comic Book Diner podcast. They’re holding a HUGE CONTEST with Valentine’s Day 2011 being the deadline. I’m only telling this to you now because I figure you prefer the pressure of a last minute deadline like I do.  🙂

Canadian Knight

Badge of Honour

I would love the honour of being bestowed the Order of Canada. The way I understand it, it’s the Canadian equivalent to a knighthood. That is serious business right there.

The only downside is that it’s often given to people with a lifetime of achievement under their belt and I’m still fairly young. I was hoping to be knighted while I was still young enough to commission a suit of armour to be made to fit. I think I would cut a dashing figure in a sterling plated suit, with my badge proudly displayed over my heart. I would re-enact scenes from Don Quixote and charge after giants… because Quixote had it right.

Life is what you make of it. If it’s full of dreams, then dream big. If it’s full of love, use all of your heart. If it’s full of pride, do your best and create that which you can be proud of… and soon you will have a lifetime of achievements.

But how sad would I look as an old man waiting for the Order of Canada. Pretty sad, indeed.

For a consolation, I will gladly accept a Shuster.
