Kailee

Sorceress Supreme

This week’s F3 features Kailee from Lars Brown’s North World. I first met Lars virtually on a social networking site called myspace… that was a very long time ago but I assure you, it was cool at the time. I have also met him in person at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo where he was the first to recommend that I read a series called Scott Pilgrim. Lars has his finger on the pulse of all things awesome.

Coincidentally, Lars is a fan of One Piece, ergo One Piece is awesome.

Drawing Kailee was a challenge and I think she ended up looking more like a character from the Archie comics rather than Lars’s. I’d really like to give it another try. It might be a stylistic difference but another attempt couldn’t hurt.

Don’t let my depiction dissuade you from reading North World.

I love getting fan art. It’s wonderful to see that someone has dedicated their time and effort out of their busy schedule and made something special. If you’d like to submit some Legendary Woodsman art, please contact me.

Don’t Try This at Home

by Bean on March 9, 2011 at 12:00 am

I’m watching TV when the warning “don’t try this at home” comes up. I understand that this is more of a liability statement more than anything else but what if I really wanted to try it at home?

I can imagine that today’s professional wrestlers were moonsaulting off of the couch in their family homes years before they were even ready to get in the ring; that today’s TV bounty hunters were getting into some school-yard fights way before they started chasing wanted men. It’s harder to imagine that these ‘professionals’ were being courteous and kind little boys and girls and when they became 18 suddenly had the fine notion of endangering their lives.

Now, imagine hearing this warning to avoid risk and interpreting it as career advice. You want to become a stunt man but you’re told not to do it at home. Don’t they see that they are only standing in the way of your dream? You’re looking for support and they only tell you to quit. Obviously, if you’re not an adult, the decision of when you can put yourself at risk rests on your parents’ shoulders but, if you are an adult, it’s insulting to have someone tell you not to take a gamble.

I suppose that’s really the reason why I’m writing this. As a cartoonist, I look for resources that can offer advice on procedures, techniques, and common business practices. Every once in a while, I encounter the advice to not take a risk. I’d be wasting my time, my money, and my effort on a chance that may not be worth it. The experts say, “don’t do it” and I resent them for it. I appreciate being made aware of the risks and I can understand someone not encouraging me to throw away my money. It’s nice that they’re looking out for me. And maybe I’m interpreting it as more patronizing than it was meant to be but I don’t like being told to give up or quit a project just because it may not be profitable. Profit doesn’t always determine worth.

If I fail, I fail. There’s nothing wrong with that. Some lessons are learned with scrapes and bruises and those lessons are valuable. There should be nothing preventing me from brushing the dust off and trying again. Ultimately, it’s my decision and being told “don’t try it at home” is unwelcome advice.

Detective Boogaloo

The Elongated Hip-hop Detective

Today’s F3 features Jamar Nicholas’s Detective Boogaloo! I’ve known Jamar for approximately 12 years now, when I was starting out with Cigarro & Cerveja and I was checking out the Yahoo! Groups for comic advice and expertise. The IndyCredAllstars were there for me and helped me out a lot.

Jamar has over the last few months been going Big Time. His adaptation of Geoffrey Canada’s Fist Stick Knife Gun has hit the shelves and Jamar has received award nominations because of it. Jamar is an inspiration.

Comic Book Diner Submission

by Gabby on March 2, 2011 at 12:00 am

I entered in the Comic Book Diner Big Art Contest and was fortunate enough to be a runner-up. My congratulations go out to grand prize winner, Jason Brashier, and fellow runner-up, Nick Cedillos. Part of the contest involves photographing scenes of drawing the comic in a diner. I’m not exactly photogenic but I’m stepping outside of my comfort zone and making an effort. The following are the photographs chronicling my entry:

Tony concentrating as he lays down some blue lines.

The meal has arrived.

This mess of a plate is what I affectionately call “the usual.” I don’t know what it is about this combination that I never grow tired of. It’s comfortable and enigmatic, at the same time.

Back to drawing.

Tony holding up the finished piece.

Hobocop teaching a valuable lesson.

The great thing about Hobocop is that he is half-hobo and half-Robocop.

I had a lot of fun drawing this… and I feel strange saying it because I’m saying that a lot lately. It was great seeing the waitress’s reaction when I asked for the activity sheet and the comments whenever I’d get a refill. I would draw in a diner more often if I wasn’t worried about getting ketchup stains on the art.

Cleopatra in Space

Diving for cover

This week’s F3 features Mike Maihack’s Cleopatra in Space. Cleo has that great old-skool sci-fi feel of Lost in Space with an all-ages, family friendly story.

It was fun drawing Cleo and I wonder if Mike an I share a few influences. I see a lot of Bruce Timm in Cleo. I really love Mike’s colours. His pallet choices are fantastic and are so vibrant. I was using the eye-dropper in Photoshop and getting spooked at how drastic the colours are.

Do yourself a favour and check out Mike’s other work.
