I need to give a big thank you to Doug Curtis of The Flying Ferret for his awesome Secret Santa picture that he drew. THANK YOU, DOUG! I’m adding it to the Art Gallery.

In the interest of doing a little self-promotion, I was the Secret Santa for Bill Walko’s The Hero Business.

You can check out these great comics and many others on the Collective of Heroes website!

Stop A Bully.ca

stopabully

STOP A BULLY is a registered national charity and Canada-wide anti-bullying program developed in 2009 by a B.C. teacher which allows any student who is a victim or witness of bullying and cyberbullying to be able to safely report the details to school officials. Any student, at any school in Canada, can use this reporting service which is provided at no cost to all students and schools. The Stop A Bully program helps increase bullying awareness and accountability within schools to allow officials to be more proactive in preventing serious incidents of bullying.  Stop A Bully provides schools with critical information to be proactive in assisting all students who are witness, target and perpetrator of school bullying.

Stop A Bully comicThe comic you see on the left was conceived by president of Stop A Bully Trevor Knowlton and illustrated by me. It was my first real attempt at anti-bullying comics of hopefully many.

I like the purpose of Stop A Bully. It is an effective line of communication getting the message to the people responsible for the safe and caring environment of the school hallways and classrooms.

They also have a Pink Wrist Campaign to raise awareness of bullying and giving students the help they need to speak out.

If you are interested, you may find an Overview of Stop A Bully helpful.

Bullied: WEPTaKNtKaEtCoF – Book Review

Bullied - a book on bullying

The author of Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher and Kid Needs to Know about Ending the Cycle of Fear is Carrie Goldman, a mom-blogger who was confronted with the fact that her daughter was being taunted for having a Star Wars water bottle. You see, girls aren’t allowed to like Star Wars – it’s strictly a boys thing. When Carrie wrote a blog post detailing the situation, her daughter received an outpouring of support and it inspired Mom to look more into bullying.

Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher and Kid Needs to Know about Ending the Cycle of Fear (or WEPTaKNtKaEtCoF) is the first book that I read on the subject of bullying and I’m glad that it was. I found it to be a great introduction into the topic and well-researched without being too formal. I also liked that it examined lesser incidents of bullying along with major incidents. I know some parents who would instantly get their daughter a princess water bottle to prevent the taunting and consider the problem solved. It may resolve the immediate issue but it wouldn’t help her be resilient if another taunting scenario cropped up.

I also found her examination of gender stereotypes and how they lead to bullying to be very interesting. Girls get picked on for being too boyish, boys get picked on for being too girly and the marketing machine promotes this paradigm. [Although, when I studied marketing it had nothing to do with promoting stereotypes. If sales is a gamble, one would rely on stereotypes to make a safe bet. It’s a cold calculation that has nothing to do with the market and essentially isn’t marketing.]

The slightly disappointing parts that the book had were a chapter on minor coping techniques and a bit of celebrity name-dropping. The minor coping techniques being taught reminded me of being in school and saying, “I’m rubber and you’re glue!” I suppose it’s helpful for young kids when teasing gets out of hand but not really a solution to prevent bullying and wouldn’t work if the bully was especially aggressive. Regarding the name-dropping, the celebrities that wrote in supporting Carrie’s daughter were very kind to make themselves available. Sometimes it’s nice to know that even after being bullied you can grow up to be a successful, famous and generous individual, but there were a few times in the book when it was mentioned that a certain actor from a certain TV program mentioned something equally as insightful as a non-celebrity. I don’t believe the additional endorsement was required.

I think Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher and Kid Needs to Know about Ending the Cycle of Fear is an excellent entry-level book on bullying and would recommend it to everyone.

Cultivating Heroes for the Next Generation

A few years back, I experienced workplace bullying. At first, I didn’t even know how to identify it. I knew that I felt isolated and confused. Even while doing the best that I could do with the resources that I had, I was repeatedly threatened that I could lose my job. I wasn’t invited to job-related meetings and was denied helpful information. I wasn’t reaching a manager’s undefined expectations and he made everyone else know how bad of a job I was doing to my face and behind my back. I went online and searched “dealing with a difficult manager” and found an article that indicated that these were signs of workplace bullying.

statistics

While I was seeking help, it occurred to me that maybe I could do something to prevent bullying – that I could be an anti-bullying advocate. If I could take my talents and utilize them toward the benefit of an anti-bullying organization, future generations wouldn’t have the toxic culture of bullying that I had to endure.

results

I was amazed by the number of anti-bullying resources that exist and that each of the organizations have taken a different approach to tackle the issue:

  • ending gender discrimination
  • ending racism
  • ending hate
  • preventing bullying in sports
  • bully reporting
  • suicide prevention
  • preventing cyber-bullying
  • campaigns made in honour of a bullied victim
  • promoting positivity
  • scholarships for kids who create anti-bullying initiatives
  • positive parenting blogs
  • teaching resiliency and coping skills
  • productive education blogs
  • empathy training
  • promoting respect in the workplace
  • promoting self-advocacy
  • anti-bullying initiatives by country, province/state, region
  • raising awareness of the negative effects of bullying

My goal for 2014 is to help out the anti-bullying organizations in whatever modest way that I can as well as documenting my thoughts on the subject in the blog. I know that bullying can be kind of a dour subject and I don’t really intend on bumming everyone out so I promise to throw in some humor or good-natured snark every once in a while.

The Legendary Woodsman comic is about Gabby training to become a hero. While she is receiving guidance and struggling with some of the obstacles in her way to reaching her potential, we all face obstacles of our own. There’s nothing saying that we can’t be heroes in our own right, all we need is a little guidance.

I regret to say that I won’t be able to post a comic this Monday December 30, 2013 due to computer issues (it’s where I keep all my software).

Until the new year!
